"Make connections with people."

What tasks does your job include? What do you love about your job the most?

My job includes accurately performing payroll functions for all employees on Income Protection and WorkCover, in a timely manner. I am required to liaise with external stakeholders such as Workcover Queensland, QSuper and line managers where necessary. Our team manages employees on Work cover and Income Protection throughout all of Queensland Health so as you can imagine we are extremely busy. My favourite thing about my position is being able to problem solve and speak with clients to come up with an appropriate solution for the issue that they are having.

What was your study journey to get this job?

I started an administration school-based traineeship in 2016 (grade 11) alternating through different areas of the Redcliffe Hospital. During this two-year period, I completed a Certificate III in Business Administration and then went on to get a casual position in the Redcliffe Hospital emergency department. I worked there for about a year and then decided I wanted to expand my knowledge in different areas of Queensland Health and applied for this position in payroll and luckily enough got the position.

What are your future plans for work and study?

I plan to continue to further my knowledge throughout Queensland Health and learn as much as I can – whether that be in a payroll position or in a different department that I believe I would enjoy.

What is one thing about your study and/or job that you would love to share with people considering this career?

My advice would be to learn and experiment as much as you can. You don’t want to be stuck in a career you don’t enjoy when you get older because you were too afraid to try new things when you were young. My advice would also be to make connections with people as you are learning and don’t be afraid to ask questions. This will allow for more opportunities as you grow within your career.
