"Looking after the elderly is a part of my culture."

Why did you choose this field of work/job?

My 58 year old father has numerous disabilities that affect his quality of life. I’ve been helping him for most of my teenage years, and I enjoy it.

This job role is something I’m very passionate about. I love aged care and looking after the elderly is a part of my culture.

What tasks does your job include? What do you love about your job the most?

Interacting with older people and elders, who share their experiences and knowledge. I like hearing about their stories and being shown photos of them when they were younger.

I also like being able to assist them in their ‘grey years’ and help with their everyday lifestyle.

What was your study journey to get this job?

I started this study journey in September 2018 when I was given the opportunity to complete a Certificate III in Individual Support. I was already enrolled in Certificate II in Health Support Services at school, which gave me some understanding of working in health support. The school-based traineeship however has provided me with the ability to complete my Assistant in Nursing (AIN) qualification while gaining valuable ‘hands on’ experience in the healthcare industry.

What are your future plans for work and study?

My long-term goal is to be a paramedic however, for the moment I thoroughly enjoy this work, helping elderly people and supporting my culture.

What is one thing about your study and/or job that you would love to share with people considering this career?

My school-based AIN Traineeship is very rewarding emotionally. Don’t hesitate if this is what you’re thinking about doing. The interaction with older people is very satisfying and character building. It is a great opportunity to start your healthcare career while still at school.
